2012 - Tony Schmidt Park

Submitted by ares on
2012 Clues

So its back to the drawing board for next year
to find a spot so deep and drear.
Harder to reach all you whiners
than those buried Chilean miners.

Next year's clues will inspire dread
requiring knowledge of languages dead,
Higher math rocket science
disbanding every hunters alliance.

I take your leave. I bid adieu.
I go in search of the perfect clue.
Prepare to hike hard dig deep and delve.
Will have a grand party in 2012.

Terry

is that the nick Jake put in it when he chipped it out of the ice one year?

Only second year in the hunt for me, last year was my first one so I'm a newbie compared to some of you old timers. I was in Saint Cloud last year though finishing up a degree and had to drive down from there a couple of days so definitely looking forward to this year - being a more reasonable distance away from the parks. I had a great time searching with my girlfriend last year. That was the first time I went to any of the Saint Paul parks except Swede Hollow. Last year I did a lot of looking in Como, Burns/Indian Mounds, & Hidden Falls w/ my girlfriend. We found a frozen squirrel in Burns Park  and a lot of deer. I didn't think there would be much deer in Ramsey but I was wrong! This year the chatter seems to be about a large park with a lot of woods or possible a Northern park. I personally am thinking about Cherokee Park. Toward the end of the video the CW posted a few weeks ago about him/her hiding last year's medallion they mentioned something about Chilean miners. A quick Google search can reveal the connections between the Cherokee Indian Tribe and Chile. From what I've read about previous years it seems as though he/she doesn't give away the Park until the 3rd or 4th clue, plus the first clue hasn't obviously been posted yet as well, but you never know....what do you all think?

Hello and welcome westy & skari!!

I agree with you westy on Cherokee but only because my gal used to live right next to it and we always thought it would be there but it probably will now that she moved.

Otherwise I think that Hidden Falls is looking good for the deep history with the loss of the Ford plant this past year.

(or outside of the city limits)

Both of you should come join us on Saturday at the PDG. We like to see new faces (not that I'm tired of seeing you beautiful old CC folks faces of course)

I'm thinking Highland... but I have been saying that for years and am going to keep saying it until I am finally right!

I had some brief email conversations with Lori at the press when I saw that they were giving away the medallion. She confirmed that it is the one we found with the chunk missing above boreas. My interpretation was that it is a new puck this year. I also thought the finders from last year said it was a new puck last year as well.

Hi Westy-

If you are lucky - you will catch the fever! Actually, if you were driving down from St. Cloud to hunt last year, perhaps you have already been stricken?

With regard to the Chilean miners - Just my two cents, but I think the CW was referring to a current event item in the news at the time. It seems this CW likes to reference local or even global events of significance.

I have no preference for the drop spot, however, it would be fun if it were not in a park. Freak people out a bit.

Knowing the press and how secret they are I would be shocked if they use that old medallion again. That puck has been photographed beyond belief, it's all over FB and I doubt they would show a picture of it online and then use it. They don't want copies floating around.

A new puck last year! Dying to know what it looks like.

Do you know what the puck looked like in the years prior to the clear one you and jake found?

I have NO hunting friends and honestly, they are sick of my Medallion conversation - so I am happy to be here to visit with like-minded people.

You do realize that it is impossible for anyone to say or even think your name without following it up with..........that funky monkey!!

Brassmonkey

That's where the name came from.

In regards to the medallion, the finders said the press specifically told them not to tell Jake and I what it looks like or anyone else, go figure.

I guess I don't know for sure that there was a new puck last year but that's how I interpreted it.

With no snow this year I think that this hunt will be a doozy! I love this time of year because you get so amped up reading past clues and discussion threads!

Something tells me that the new puck looks like no other ever has.

I think I will review the video from last year and see if I can glean any info from that.

I don't know why, but something in me says that the CW may try to connect the hunt to geocaching activities this year.

Who knows - all speculation at this point.

One thing I think that most typical hunters do not consider -is the logistics of the hunt. I always ask myself - can several thousand people get here safely and park cars without a complete and total disruption of emergency services?

if it's the same cluewriter/hider from the past 8-10 years, I know two things for absolute certain. A. It will be in a large park B. It will be in a large tree/stump in the middle of the biggest patch of woods they can find.

Last night would have been a great night to drop the puck, especially, if the CW is thinking about "encasing" it in some sort of congealed concoction.
Thu, 01/19/2012 - 7:41 AM Permalink
Mad_Dach5und

Stumps are the first place people look. It will be on the ground.

I'm thinking this 'scrambled pre-clues' idea is unbroken/untested ground for the Press, and they are fishing for something new. It will be interesting to find out if this gimmick works, or blows up in their face.

Yes, I am thinking attached to wood bark or grass. Something natural.

So do you think it has been the same CW for the last 8-10 years? There was one really weird year where the clues seemed like a different CW - but otherwise, I agree.

I sort of remember the switch. The previous CW seemed to like to reference a lot of historical items - vs. this CW seems to like to reference current events.

Hey Mad_dach5und

I lived in Germany for a spell and found it hilarious that they do not know what a Dachshund is.

I guess they call it only a Dachs. Never with the hund added - that is an English thing, I was told.

I can further assume from previous years that they seem to like large downed trees, it gives a long area along the trunk where they can stick a medallion in between the ground and the trunk.

If they tie the clues into recent events...the Ford plant/HF is high on my list... so is Arden Hills with all the talk of a Vikings stadium. But there are only 2 parks big enough to host a long hunt with little snow - Tony Schmidt and Floral. Cummings Park is also large but is mostly athletic without any woods.

Maybe the puck will be wrapped in a piece of the old metrodome roof.

Good day all!

Since all the newbies are chiming in thought I'd follow in-- My brother and I have been hunting since youngsters but have only been obsessive for the last 4 hunts. We came to the Re-Hash last year and took a shot at the mock hunt, so here we are!

From last years video congratulating the winners. First - the person hiding the puck is wearing a men's coat as noted from the placement of the buttons. Additionally, I believe they prefer using a pencil to write, vs. a pen. That to me says OLD.

Sound familiar to anyone?

I have noted some other observations about the person in the video on the prospero board, however, folks over there believe that the hider is simply an actor. Honestly, I am not sure, but, it seems curious to make a concerted effort to conceal oneself if one is only an actor.

from one kabbie over on prospero; you probably saw this, skari:

all hail to Mary Dan and Molly who

persisted when others thought it folly

the trio who gave it a wee hours whirl

I would expect no less from a bouncing girl

family and friends all got a lift

cold camaraderie the hunts greatest gift

as I took the medallion out for the hiding

I felt the joy that it would soon be providing

I planted it under snowfall deep

someone must have plowed before Molly reaped

to come so close some would say is tragic

but to me that's just treasure hunt magic

alas went by too fast

reminding us to noodle hard from first clue to last

so its back to the drawing board for next year

to find a spot so deep in drear

harder to reach all you whiners

than those buried Chilean miners

next year's clues will inspire dread

requiring knowledge of languages dead

higher math rocket science

disbanding every hunters alliance

I take your leave I bid ado

I go in search of the perfect clue

prepare to hike hard dig deep and dell

will have a grand party in 2012

assuming that this holds water for 2012, an isn't just a lead-on, could the scrambling be the "requiring knowledge of languages dead" or am i just over-noodling? probably the latter because the assumption is probably bs anyway.

Came here this morning for my obligatory "I'm back" post and my account expired today. Son of a bitch! 6 hours and $10 later and I'm finally back.

So who's ready to rake this year?
Thu, 01/19/2012 - 1:42 PM Permalink
skari

Logistically, it would seem a disaster to place the puck somewhere far up north - Such as a park like Rice Creek Regional Park because if it came down to the last clue, people might drive like maniacs to get there first - but then I remembered that you can get the clues only at GABE"S on lexington. Follow that all the way up and you land at Rice creek park. Additionally, it lies on the border of Anoka and Ramsey counties, and is directly north of the Armory in Arden Hills - and the BEST BEST part is that it is not shown as a park on google maps. It is a huge park with Savanna oak.

Thoughts?

Talk to me!

Highly caffienated and ready.

What is going to be your tool of choice this year? Rake? Litter Spear? Broom?

I am a newbie - hi

skari

Thanks, Ares actually, no, I did not see it. Bu, I was able to locate the video and rewatch it a few times.

The part that caught me was languages dead

and also the disbanding of hunters alliance. The latter part says to me that it will be either a pull between two parks, or it will somehow require hunters to disband - go on their own - about a theory - such as small park, or border park, or not a park at all.

Latin is a language dead, but I agree that the ciphers may be what is referred to.

I think we are going to have to polish on on that for clue 12.

I think the Writing with a pencil vs pen is the fact that in the cold a Pencil will always work right every time as to a pen can freeze up and then your stuck with nothing to write with lol! and I don't think that it would be a actor because that is one more person that has knowledge of where it is and as some of us know the more people that know something the sooner its going to get out! and make a big mess of things!

just my 2 cents! :goofy:

Welcome to the mayhem! I'm not a newbie (been since 2003 in Harrie... I mean Como (fucking bastards....)) I got no idea what I'm digging with. Rakes are what I'll probably use. Sadly I don't know how much I'll be out this year. But when I do get a chance go out it will most likely be the coldest, shittiest day of the whole hunt.

//Or Jake will just find it in two clues again

So this is the biological logic behind why I hunt for the puck!

From page 420 of my College Algebra text:

"Do you enjoy solving puzzles? The process is a natural way to develop problem-solving skills that are important to every area of our lives. Engaging in problem solving for sheer pleasure releases chemicals in the brain that enhance our feeling of well-being." B. Blitzer

And for those interested in a puzzle. To better understand how to decipher, I have created a fun cypher. Here goes.
