You can play pretty much anything with an emulator. As for the Vista debate, Windows 7 is basically Vista that works. It's what Vista should have been, and would have been, if MS wasn't under such intense pressure to release it. XP uses 450 MB of RAM when it is running idle. Vista uses something like 950. Windows 7 is somewhere in the middle. My laptop with windows 7 and 3 gigs of RAM usually uses about 15-20% when it's idle.

Dude if your laptop is Running Idle at 15-20% you better get that thing checked out because when mine is sitting idle I am lucky if it is at 6% most of the time it Idle's right around 4-6% and that is Normal!

that Was when I had 2 gigs of Memory!

It runs the same right now and I have 10 gigs right now! But I also have 2 other program's that are running again that I wasn't running at the time! So it should have went up! at that point! what are you running that you dont need to be running?

Also Windows 7 is the is better then Vista a Little better in options then XP but other then that I would have to say it is one of the best OS that have been put out in a long time!

I was talking about memory usage. Also, I agree that windows 7 is the best, when I said it was in the middle I was also talking about memory usage, not overall opinion.

"So, what is there besides Windows on a computer for a start menu and desktop?"

Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to be on the internet there is the new Chrome OS. If you want to run on the "techie" side there are lots of flavors of Linux and most of them are very user friendly. If you ditch windoze you will also be less vulnerable to viruses and malware. Ubuntu is really good and you can put it on a CD and try it before you install it. It will run completely off the CD. It is much slower when doing that, but you can experience it and determine if it works for you. http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Otherwise if your a PC gamer or run lots of Windoze applications you are pretty much SOL unless you want to run a windoze emulator in Linux. I do know people that run a copy of Windoze XP as a virtual machine within Linux and that seems to work pretty well, but it's a lot of overhead.

Ok, That was probably more than you wanted to know so I'll put my pen back in my pocket protector and move along.

It's good as long as you buy a new computer. I wouldn't recommend trying to install it on an older machine. There are lots of reported issues from people trying to do that. The exception is if you are upgrading from Vista than it generally works, but YMMV.

What is an emulator?

The McGee's Alice computer game doesn't work on anything higher than an ME? I think.

It's a program that you run that simulates an operating system or program and allows you to run a program on a machine that it wasn't designed for. There were DOS emulators for a long time in the windows OS. When people would run a dos program they weren't really running dos, they were running within an emulation or simulation of DOS mode.

The emulator is part of linux, it's called wine. But if you want a virtual machine you'll have to build one with a valid Windows license.

I was thinking more of something like Dosbox, which is a MS-DOS emulator for Windows that will allow you to play some older games. The game you posted about is a Windows game though. From a Google search on that particular game, Vista doesn't extract all the game's zip files when it installs. If you do it manually the game should work.

Lots of good discussion here.

Since I have a new laptop with an Intel core i7 with the hardware virtualization extensions, I've been getting into building virtual machines. So far, I have dos 6.22, windows 3.1, windows 95 and Ubuntu. I'm getting an XP machine started soon, and will then be able to do some software testing. They perform well enough to be usable. Like my software for copying the videos from the Pioneer Press site. I don't particularly trust the code for it, but if I install it in a virtual machine, it doesn't affect my core OS and files. If it breaks the VM, I can just recreate a new one.
